The Way of the Bow

A full draw, called "kai".

A full draw, called "kai".

If archer shoots just for fun he has all his skill.
If he shoots for score his hands tremble and his breath is uneasy.
If he shoots for a golden price he becomes mad and blind.
His skill was not lessened, but the vision of the target changed him.

Old Chinese poem

The Way of the Bow is a story written by Paulo Coelho. The story is revolve around Tetsuya – the master of archery who now lived as carpenter in small village. No villagers know the fact that Tetsuya has great skill in archery, until one day another archer is come to challenge Tetsuya. One boy observed the battle between two archer. After the battle is over, the boy learn the way of the bow – aka kyūdō – from Tetsuya. The rest of the story is consist the explanation of the way of the boy by Tetsuya.

The story is short – you can finish reading it in less than two hours – but I found the story enjoyable. Tetsuya explanation is simple and easy to understand, even one who never known archery before will find it easy to understand. Although the story mainly talks about bow and arrow, the principle behind those is applicable to many aspect of life. Tetsuya himself tell the boy : “Because the way of the bow serves for everything, and my dream was to work with wood. Besides, an archer who follows the way does not need a bow or an arrow or a target”.

Maybe you will find the story is rather patronizing the reader. That is acceptable given the story told is based on Tetsuya lecture to the boy. But personally, I wish there are more and more teacher like Tetsuya. A teacher who master their expertise,  give a meaning to his students, and give explanation that easy to understand. I quite sure there are many Tetsuya’s words is worth enough to take notes.

Here is some excerpt from the book :

“Thank you for your company,’ he said to the boy”

But the boy did not leave.

“How can I know if I’m doing the right thing? How can I be sure that my eyes are concentrating, that my posture is elegant, that I’m holding the bow correctly?”

“Visualize the perfect master always by your side and do everything to revere him and to honor his teachings. This master, whom many people call God, although some call him ‘the thing’ and others ‘talent’, is always watching us. He deserves the best”

Want to read it? Fortunately, Paulo Coelho is generously share The Way of the Bow for free. I hope someday I’m able to write great and high quality books too and share it for free :).

Are you ready, Player One?

Last week has been a hectic week. I had to prepare for my thesis presentation, which nearly screwed up by last minute problem (some “minor” problem about room placement). My mind is gone blank the instant I stand in the front of audients. Every single scenario I had prepared in my mind the day before all completely gone. Fortunately, after presenting few slides, alhamdulillah, I had been able to regain my composure and even cracked a few jokes. Well, I admit some of them are lame :P. In the next morning, I found myself sprawled in my bed without any energy left. So I do what I always do when that condition comes : read some, often a lot, of books. One of book I read is Ready Player One.

Ready Player One

Have you ever playing MMORPG? It is quite fun. You can interact with other player. Chatting, travelling, trading, battling, even dating. It is like you have another life in the world of 0 and 1. Now imagine an online simulation games, called OASIS, which contains every fictional world ever created by humanity. Imagine you able to immerse yourself into the game, seeing any virtual object with your eyes and even feel it by your hand. There are billion of people log in into OASIS, daily, to do many activities (including going to school). A simulated world that became second life for humanity.

What you think will happen if the OASIS co-founder died and left a huge sum of money that will be given to first person whom able to discover the easter egg he left behind? A massive hunt with billion participant. To win, a player must discover three key that will unlock the secret of the game. After five years after the Hunt began, no one discover it. Even evil corporation called Innovative Online Industries cannot find it. Many had though the Hunt is only joke. That is, until Wade Watts, or Parzival, an 18-year-old orphan found the first key. And then the world is going havoc.

Parzival discovery leads to a grand adventure that will decide the fate of OASIS. An adventure with friends, lover, and enemies who are willing a real murder to win the game. The adventure run through the world Dungeon of Dragon, Ghostbuster, Back to the Future and many of geek-culture references from the 1980s. If you are a gamer, or game developer, you MUST read this book .

If you are not yet resolved to read this book, you can try read the first three chapter for free. Happy reading :).

Hunger Games

Hunger Games

“Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when it’s morning again, they’ll wash away
Here it’s safe, here it’s warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.”
-Katniss Everdeen

“Winning means fame and fortune.
Losing means certain death.
The Hunger Games have begun…”

Akhirnya tibalah hari penentuan peserta Hunger Games.

“Katniss, the girl who was on fire”

“She has no idea. The effect she can have”
-Peeta Mellark

“Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to…to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games”
-Peeta Mellark

Sukses hat-trick tiga tulisan resensi dalam satu hari

Ember Tetralogi #2 : People of Spark

Lebih sulit menjadi baik daripada menjadi jahat

People of Spark (

People of Spark adalah buku kedua dari tetralogi Ember karangan Jeanne DuPrau. People of Spark diterbitkan di Indonesia pada tahun 2009.

People of Spark menceritakan kisah tentang warga kota Ember yang menemukan jalan keluar dari kota bawah tanah mereka.

People of Spark memiliki pesan moral yang dalam.

Ember Tetralogi #1 : City of Ember

City of Ember

“What you need to learn, children, is the difference between right and wrong in every area of life. And once you learn the difference, you must always choose the right.”
